Are you at a place in your healing journey where you feel ready to help other suicide loss survivors who are newer to their grief? If so, you may be interested in the National LOSS Team Conference taking place in Omaha, Nebraska, October 13 – 15, 2025. This annual gathering brings together Local Outreach to Suicide Survivors (LOSS) volunteers from across the country to strengthen skills, share experiences, and build support networks.Â
Founded by Dr. Frank Campbell in 1998, LOSS Teams provide immediate, in-person support to those grieving after a suicide. Their innovative postvention model pairs two or more trained volunteers—at least one of whom is a suicide loss survivor—who reach out proactively in the first hours after a loss.Â
LOSS volunteers offer comfort, understanding, and essential resources at a time when survivors are most vulnerable.
Their presence is a lifeline. By bridging the gap that so often exists in the immediate aftermath of a suicide, LOSS Teams help survivors feel less alone and more supported. While each team adapts to the needs of its community, all share the same mission: to provide compassionate outreach and foster connection.
The Alliance of Hope has emerged as a natural partner in this essential work. LOSS teams distribute thousands of our Hope after Suicide brochures and other materials, ensuring that grieving individuals have immediate access to crucial resources and guidance that can help them navigate their journey through loss.
The roots of LOSS Teams began with Dr. Frank Campbell’s research.
Dr. Campbell found that it took survivors an average of 4.5 years to seek assistance after a suicide. Recognizing that many struggled alone, Dr. Campbell developed the LOSS model. The program caught the spotlight of the Discovery Channel, leading to national and international documentaries that raised awareness about the profound impact of suicide and the essential role of support networks.
Don Belau, a member of the Alliance of Hope’s board, was instrumental in expanding LOSS Teams nationwide. He helped organize the first National LOSS Team Conference in 2011, establishing a tradition that continues to unite and inspire volunteers to this day.
We hope to see you at this year’s conference.
The conference will offer the invaluable opportunity to engage with key figures in the suicide postvention field—including Dr. Campbell, who continues to champion this critical work. The Alliance of Hope will also host an information table, staffed by board member Steve Shannon, who leads our support groups for fathers who have lost children to suicide.Â
